Business Model

To all our readers, thanks for popping in and reading this blog.

This evening, we went to Alex Osterwalder, Business Model Generation seminar at the Science Gallery in Dublin. The event was sold out with a good crowd attending. I met many familiar friends, with many different academic classes being represented, UCD, Smurfit MBA, DIT Masters, Ryan Academy and I guess a few more.

Alex presented the origins of his book, from his 2004 PhD thesis to the development & launch of the Business Model Generation book. If you are unfamiliar with this book, please head over to the www.businessmodelgeneration.com site and you will get a brief introduction into it.

I must say, that I am a convert to this book, so this is not a sales pitch on buying the book, but the innovative method that was employed to get buy-in and international support from both collaborators and interested parties is a method to become an international business book best seller.

One million books published each year (english titles), 51,000 business books each year, so in essence 1000 per week. Initially Alex published his thesis for all to see on the internet, with gathered some followers, and then with the advent of the book, he took the option to all interested parties to be come contributors to the book with a donation to the costs, and this was popular that the price increase by 25% each time, until a few days before print, this had increased to 250 dollars US.

This method allowed a crowd sourcing effect to get buy in from contributors in 46 different countries, and their respective business networks, which has led to its success. Excellent stakeholder buy in, and effective marketing.

Therefore, what does this entail, well to give a brief synopsis of the book; it is far easier to understand your business, the flow of through your business. You can see it as a picture, in essence, ‘a picture paints a thousand words’. Once we can see what your business looks like, how easy it is to simplify it, and not to be bogged down in business plans.
